It is almost time for the biggest match of world cricket. Come Sunday at Colombo, India and Pakistan would be renewing their iconic rivalry at the T20 World Cup. But this time, the pre-match natter isn’t about just the usual pressure, about billions watching, about political backdrops that so often surround this clash. This time, the talk is about a pause.
Pakistan has thrown up a new weapon, a bowler with odd beat and swift climb who has posed a gripping tactical riddle for the Indian batsmen. His name is Usman Tariq, and it is his way of bowling that has turned into one of the hottest subjects of talk all over the tournament.
To know the threat, you must know the man. It is hardly an exaggeration to say that the journey of Usman Tariq from there to here smacks more of something one would see in a movie than what actually happens on an everyday basis in anybody’s life. His cricketing dreams had once been shelved by the 30-year-old, and not so long ago, he was peddling wares in Dubai. A 2016 Bollywood film based on the Indian great MS Dhoni flicked his ambitions alive. The story of Dhoni’s grit and persistence made Tariq believe it was not too late for him to run after his own fate.
He quit Dubai, found coaches, and with pure grit plus an odd trait- he says he is “double-jointed” with unusual flexibility in his bowling elbow- molded himself into a “mystery spinner.”
Since he made his debut only three months ago, the numbers have been staggering. In four T20Is, he picked up 11 wickets at an average of just under eight runs per wicket. Already, he has taken a hat-trick against Zimbabwe, added with a match-defining spell that returned figures of 3-27 against the USA in the opening encounter of the World Cup. Pakistan captain Agha Salman had nothing to hide as he gave an open message to Tariq, ‘You are our X-factor,’ thus handing over responsibility to unleash him against their biggest rivals.

Some people have questioned whether Tariq’s ball is legal, meaning if he upholds the guidelines. Different players have criticized Tariq’s method of bowling, calling it unacceptable and permitted by the rules, such as Cameron Green and R Ashwin. Official tests demonstrated that his ball is legal, despite some participants ‘questions. In T20 bowling, batters typically have a strategy in place and prepare for the ball’s strike.
They are hesitant, however, because Tariq abruptly stops. They frequently miss or hit the ball terribly because of their hésitation. According to an expert, the delay makes the batter less uncertain, so they only partially commit to hitting, making it simpler for Tariq to get them out.
This is where the military battle becomes really fascinating. India’s present top order is seriously left-handed. From the incendiary Abhishek Sharma at the top to the previously anointed number three, Ishan Kishan, India may have a grouping of left-handers.
On paper, this is music to the lips of a right-arm off-spinner like Tariq. The ball turning away from the left-hander, threatening the inside edge, is a share batsman’s dream. The risk is that left-handers may get trapped playing around their top sheet, specifically against the one that doesn’t turn, the taller delivery that skids on with the shoulder.
If Tariq, you land the ball on a great length around center and away, he may pin the left-handers on the crease. If they are even somewhat late on the photo, they risk being bowled through the doorway or, worse, given out LBW playing down the wrong column. As one thorough military preview noted, the key is to prevent getting “pinned on the pad-line. “

🚨 Pakistanis 🇵🇰 fear that umpires may remove Usman Tariq from bowling tomorrow:

“Ravi Ashwin, who himself spent his whole career taking pauses, is now advising his players against Usman Tariq’s pauses.
And everyone already knows ICC, umpires and referee will favour India.” 😭 pic.twitter.com/MysLd65sNr
How does this new threat get thwarted by a star-studded Indian line-up, which combines explosive youth with experienced pros? It won’t be about blatant anger. A solid, focused strategy may be involved.
The first and most crucial guideline for Indian batters will be to concentrate solely on the release rather than the theater of the pause. The batter’s inner timer is interrupted by the pause to distract. The trick is to maintain stability at the crease, maintain eye contact with the ball, and choose to play merely after Tariq has finished holding it.
Narendra Hirwani, a former Indian spinner, gave a clear piece of advice. You, as a batter, also take your time, according to Hirwani, if he [Tariq] is taking his time to bowl. Tariq, don’t launch him for a six during his first few shipments against him. It should be about taking a one and rotating the strike while watching him closely. Half of the battle is won by becoming familiar with his movements and variants.
India’s batters may disrupt Tariq’s size by using their feet. By moving deeper in the seam, they can get themselves a fraction of a minute to see the ball afterwards. By stepping out, they may bury the roll and change a potential wicket-taking distribution into a rating opportunity down the ground. The key is to be crucial and not get stuck on the back foot, playing him from the batting group.
India may also employ a pinch-hitter with the abundance of left-handers. Even for a few deliveries, a right-handed delivery does force Tariq to switch his attack strategy. When a right-hander hits the ball, the ball will now enter the dough, giving the ball a chance to score through midwicket. His pattern and his predetermined field placements are slowed down by it.
At the same time, attention has shifted to other global leagues where on-field performance remains the sole focus. Sunrisers Eastern Cape’s strong run at the top of the SA20 points table, driven by crucial bonus wins, highlights how franchise cricket elsewhere continues to thrive amid stability and sporting clarity.

This India-Pakistan match, like usual, will feature more players than just one bowler, despite Usman Tariq having received the new name on everyone’s lips. With reports estimating the game’s value at $250 million and a viewership that is expected to rival the Super Bowl, it will be played in the midst of intense political tension and commercial pressure.
India is the enormous favorite heading into the suit. With the exception of one of their last 14 World Cup encounters, their current performance against Pakistan has been nothing short of dominant. They have the firepower to blog impressive totals thanks to the damaging Abhishek Sharma, who has the highest-ever T20I strike rate, and Suryakumar Yadav’s calm finishing.
No matter how far video evaluation you’ve done, facing a spinner for the first time in a high-pressure sport is usually a different challenge, as former India spinner Venkatapathy Raju noted. Pakistan’s biggest trump card will be removed if the Indian best order can effectively undo Tariq’s mystery.
The game may turn in Pakistan’s favor if the pause works its magic and the left-handers are tied in thick overs. The struggle won’t only be between bat and ball on Sunday in Colombo. Between the brain and the instant, between patience and panic. A 30-year-old past salesman who was living out a dream in a movie will be the focal point of the World Cup charge in India.
