Oh my god guys the WORST thing happened in Colombo! Pakistan vs New Zealand Super 8 match was COMPLETELY washed out by rain! Not a single ball bowled! Both teams got 1 point each and now the qualification race is SO COMPLICATED my brain is hurting! Let me explain everything!
So on Saturday, February 21, Pakistan and New Zealand were supposed to play their first Super 8 match at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Everyone was SO excited! My friend Ali wore his Pakistan jersey! I wore my neutral jersey! We had snacks ready!
But then… RAIN! It started raining in the morning and just WOULDN’T STOP! Groundsmen ran with covers! Umpires kept checking! Fans waited and waited! But finally at 8:15 PM, umpires said “MATCH CANCELLED! No play possible!”
Both teams got 1 point each from the washout. Pakistan now has 1 point, New Zealand has 1 point. But they NEED more points to reach the semi-finals!

This was the FIRST Super 8 match for both teams! A win would have given them 2 points and a STRONG start! Now they only have 1 point and must win the remaining matches!
In Super 8, top TWO teams from each group go to the semi-finals! Group 2 has: Sri Lanka, England, Pakistan, New Zealand. All are STRONG teams!
YES! Pakistan can STILL qualify but it’s TOUGH! Let me explain scenarios like math class but FUN!
Pakistan’s Remaining Matches:
| Match | Opponent | Date | Venue |
| 1 | England | Feb 24 | Colombo |
| 2 | Sri Lanka | Feb 28 | Colombo |
Scenario 1: Pakistan wins BOTH matches
Pakistan gets 2 + 2 = 4 more points!
Total = 1 (from washout) + 4 = 5 points!
5 points DEFINITELY enough for top 2! QUALIFY!
Scenario 2: Pakistan wins ONE match, loses ONE
Pakistan gets 2 points from win, 0 from los
Total = 1 + 2 = 3 points
Then it depends on other results! Net run rate might decide!
If England and Sri Lanka also get 3-4 points, Pakistan could miss out! TRICKY!
Scenario 3: Pakistan loses BOTH matches
Pakistan gets 0 more points
Total = 1 point
ELIMINATED! Go home!
Scenario 4: More rain?
If any match washed out, teams get 1 point each
That could help or hurt depending on the situation!
So Pakistan MUST win at least 2 matches? Actually they have 2 matches left so MUST win BOTH to be SAFE! If they win one, they depend on others!
New Zealand also has 1 point from the washout. They play:
Same rules for them! Win both = SAFE! Win one = depend on others! Lose both = GO HOME!
New Zealand also has 1 point from the washout. They play:
| Match | Opponent | Date | Venue |
| 1 | Sri Lanka | Feb 23 | Colombo |
| 2 | England | Feb 27 | Colombo |

Sri Lanka – They haven’t played Super 8 yet! First match against New Zealand on Feb 23. If they win, they get 2 points and become group leaders!
England – Also haven’t played! First match against Pakistan on Feb 24. If they win, they get 2 points!
So Group 2 is WIDE OPEN! Anyone can qualify! Every match matters!
After the washout, Pakistan players were sad but stayed positive! Babar Azam (if he plays) said “We will focus on the next matches. One point is better than zero.”
Coach Mike Hesson said “Disappointing but we can’t control the weather. Now we must win the remaining matches.”
Shaheen Afridi posted on Instagram with an umbrella emoji and said “See you next match!”
My friend Ali is CRYING! He said “Why does rain always ruin Pakistan matches?” I said “At least you got 1 point instead of losing!” But he wants Pakistan to qualify so badly!
On social media, Pakistani fans are praying for no more rain! Indian fans are watching from the side! Everyone wants to see the PAK vs IND semi-final maybe!
| Date | Match | Venue | Time (IST) |
| Feb 23 | New Zealand vs Sri Lanka | Colombo | 3:30 PM |
| Feb 24 | Pakistan vs England | Colombo | 7:00 PM |
| Feb 27 | New Zealand vs England | Colombo | 7:00 PM |
| Feb 28 | Pakistan vs Sri Lanka | Colombo | 7:00 PM |
| Mar 1 | Sri Lanka vs England | Colombo | 3:30 PM |
| Team | Matches | Points | NRR |
| Pakistan | 1 | 1 | 0.000 |
| New Zealand | 1 | 1 | 0.000 |
| Sri Lanka | 0 | 0 | 0.000 |
| England | 0 | 0 | 0.000 |
Pakistan can STILL qualify! But they MUST win both remaining matches against England and Sri Lanka! No more rain, no more mistakes, just WIN!
