I have HUGE news about Jasprit Bumrah. After winning the T20 World Cup 2026 for India (his SECOND T20 World Cup win), Bumrah might STOP playing T20 Internationals for a LONG time. Like maybe 18 months. He will focus on ONE-DAY cricket and TESTS because India wants to win the ODI World Cup 2027. Let me explain everything.
Bumrah was AMAZING in the T20 World Cup 2026. He took 14 wickets in 8 matches with an economy rate of 6.12. In the final against New Zealand, he took 4 wickets for 15 runs and destroyed them. He is the joint-highest wicket-taker in the tournament.
Virat Kohli called him a “national treasure” after the 2024 World Cup. And he PROVED it again.
The BIG Decision:
After the World Cup, the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) and team management made a PLAN. They want Bumrah to focus on the ODI World Cup 2027 in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
A BCCI source told PTI news: “Obviously, Bumrah’s fitness is, as always, key to any of India’s global campaigns and hence the Indian team management will have to be very careful and prioritise the formats. Keep Test cricket aside, which he will obviously play, but in the 50-over World Cup cycle, he will concentrate more on ODIs.”
That means – Bumrah will play TESTS and ODIs, but NOT many T20Is.

According to reports, Bumrah might take a break from T20 Internationals for the next 18 months – until around October-November 2027. During this time, India will play about 30-35 ODI matches, and they need Bumrah FIT for all of them.
India will start preparing for the 2027 World Cup after IPL 2026 ends. Coach Gautam Gambhir, captain Shubman Gill (ODI and Test captain), and VVS Laxman (Centre of Excellence head) will make the final plan.
Asian Games 2026 will be held in Japan (Aichi-Nagoya). Bumrah will likely SKIP this tournament. Instead, Suryakumar Yadav might captain the team. Bumrah needs rest for bigger goals.
Why This Decision?
Bumrah has a history of INJURIES. He missed:
He also hasn’t played a single ODI since November 19, 2023 – the 2023 World Cup final against Australia at Ahmedabad. That’s like TWO AND A HALF YEARS without ODI cricket.
India has been CAREFUL with him. He missed two Tests in England last year too. Now they want to make sure he is 100% fit for the 2027 World Cup and World Test Championship final (same year).
After World Cup win, Bumrah posted on X (Twitter):
“Couldn’t have imagined this any better even if I tried. From dreaming about playing for India in this city to creating history here, it’s been a blessed ride. Grateful for this team, the support, the fans, and this moment.”
So he is HAPPY and ready for the next challenges.

GOOD NEWS. Bumrah will play for the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2026 starting March 29. He will lead their pace attack again. MI’s first match is against Kolkata Knight Riders at Wankhede Stadium on March 29 at 7:30 PM.
But the BCCI might ask MI to manage his workload – maybe rest him sometimes or use him as an impact player.
At the same time, attention has shifted to other global leagues where on-field performance remains the sole focus. Sunrisers Eastern Cape’s strong run at the top of the SA20 points table, driven by crucial bonus wins, highlights how franchise cricket elsewhere continues to thrive amid stability and sporting clarity.

After the 2027 World Cup, 2028 is SUPER busy. There will be:
T20 World Cup 2028 (co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand)
2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles (cricket is BACK in the Olympics.)
ICC Champions Trophy
Bumrah is KEEN to play in the LA Olympics 2028. But that’s a long-term goal. First, the 2027 World Cup.
India’s main fast bowlers for ODIs will be:
So we have GOOD backup. But Bumrah is the CHIEF.
You know what I think? This is a SMART decision. Bumrah is 32 years old now (turning 33 in December) . Fast bowlers have short careers. We must use him WISELY.
He has already won TWO T20 World Cups (2024 and 2026). Now he wants the ODI World Cup and World Test Championship. That would make him COMPLETE.
So yes, let Bumrah rest from T20Is. Let him focus on ODIs and Tests. Let him be ready for 2027.
And in the IPL, we can still watch him bowl deadly yorkers for the Mumbai Indians.
