No extra pressure in semis as South Africa plot path to Ahmedabad

Guys the T20 World Cup semi-finals is HERE! South Africa is playing New Zealand on Wednesday at Eden Gardens in Kolkata and the Proteas are NOT scared. Their coach Shukri Conrad said some AMAZING things about pressure, favourites tag, and going to Ahmedabad for the final! Let me explain everything.

South Africa is UNBEATEN in the Tournament

South Africa is the ONLY team in the whole World Cup that hasn’t lost a single match! They beat India, they beat West Indies, they beat Zimbabwe, they beat everyone! They are on FIRE.

In their last Super 8 match, they played Zimbabwe in Delhi on Sunday. Zimbabwe made 153 runs and South Africa chased it down in 17.5 overs with 5 wickets left! Easy win.

Sikandar Raza played AMAZING for Zimbabwe – he scored 73 runs from 43 balls with 8 fours and 4 sixes! Then he took 3 wickets also! But it was NOT enough! South Africa’s bench players stepped up! Kwena Maphaka (19 years old!) took 2 wickets for 21 runs.

Now South Africa is in the semi-finals and they are CONFIDENT!

What Coach Shukri Conrad Said?

Coach Conrad spoke to reporters after the Zimbabwe match and said some SUPER interesting things!

On Pressure:

“There’s always pressure. I think it’s what you do with that pressure and how you shift the pressure. It’s really about embracing that pressure.”

That means – pressure is there but you can’t run away! You must HUG it!

On Favourites Tag:

South Africa is the ONLY unbeaten team so everyone says they are FAVOURITES to win the World Cup! Coach Conrad said:

“I’m glad that we’re favourites because I always felt that as a South African team, you want to be able to play as a favourite because it’s easy being an underdog. The expectation isn’t great or that much.”

He means – being underdog is EASY because no one expects you to win! Being favourite means people believe in you! That’s GOOD!

On Preparation:

“We’re going to prepare exactly the same way for New Zealand. Whether we start as favourites, probably because we’re the only unbeaten side in the competition. But I don’t know if that adds to the pressure. I think the semi-final is pressure enough. Playing a top side New Zealand is enough pressure.”

So they will NOT change anything! Same practice, same routines, same everything!

On Going to Ahmedabad:

Coach Conrad said something SUPER exciting! He mentioned playing the final at “our home ground in Ahmedabad”!

Why is Ahmedabad the “home ground”? Because South Africa BEAT India there by 76 runs in Super 8! They played SO well at Narendra Modi Stadium! So they want to go back for FINAL on March 5!

Aiden Markram – SUPERSTAR Captain

Captain Aiden Markram is having the BEST tournament of his life! He has scored 268 runs in 6 matches at an average of 66.00 and strike rate of 178.37! That’s CRAZY good!

He is the LEADING run-scorer among all semi-finalists! He scored 82 not out vs West Indies, 46 vs India, and consistent runs in every match!

Coach Conrad praised Markram SO much:

“Aiden has been fantastic both with bat in hand as you mentioned and as a leader as well as a captain. But you’re only as good as your troops and he’d be the first one to admit that. So it’s easy to captain a bowling unit that’s on top of their game and batters that are firing.”

Markram also moved to No. 4 in South Africa’s all-time T20I run-scorers! He passed JP Duminy!

Learning from 2024 Final Loss

South Africa lost the final of 2024 T20 World Cup to India in Barbados. That was SO sad! They were SO close! But Coach Conrad says that experience helps NOW:

“I think our experience in the last T20 World Cup will stand us in good stead. And again, when you keep making semi-finals and finals, and I’ve said this many times previously, “If you continually make semi-finals and finals, eventually you’re going to win one.”

That’s SO true! You can’t win the final if you don’t reach the final! South Africa is reaching finals regularly – now they must WIN!

What About New Zealand?

New Zealand is UNDERDOG in this match! They qualified for the semis with better net run rate after Pakistan lost to Sri Lanka. They lost to England in the last Super 8 match.

But New Zealand is ALWAYS dangerous in ICC tournaments! They have Mitchell Santner (captain), Rachin Ravindra, Glenn Phillips, Lockie Ferguson! They can beat anyone on their day!

You know what I think? South Africa is LOOKING STRONG! They are unbeaten, they have Markram in form, they have amazing fast bowlers! But New Zealand is dangerous in knockouts! Remember the 2015 ODI World Cup? NZ beat SA in the semi-final!

Coach Conrad is saying all the RIGHT things – embrace pressure, prepare the same, don’t change! That’s smart!
